JOB DESCRIPTION

Product (UX/UI) Designer
Reporting to James Inman, Managing Director
Remote (home-based) with occasional paid travel, £26-30,000 p/a
Safeguarding Monitor provide systems to schools, colleges and multi-academy trusts to help keep children safe – the work we do really makes a difference. We were established a year ago and were recently acquired by Impero, a market leader in online safety. We’re a remote UK-based team and are looking for multiple Ruby on Rails Engineers to join us.
We’re looking for a product designer to help us grow our team: you’ll have some ability in front-end development, with a keen eye for UI and UX design. You’ll be given ownership of our product’s design, ensuring that our functionality remains easy-to-use for customers as we continue to develop. You’ll be reporting to the Managing Director, our product owner, and working closely with the Engineering team as they bring your designs to life.
You’ll need to be comfortable translating wireframes into an intuitive interface, whilst being able to suggest and implement UX improvements. You might spend one day talking to our customers about how they use a particular feature, the next researching new controls for a particular screen, and then a few days working on some new product ideas.

We do the majority of our work and daily communication through Slack, with regular conference calls, screen shares, and opportunities for pairing. We run two-weekly sprints in a kanban fashion, but don’t get bogged down in the process. Our roadmap and in-flight boards are managed with Trello.

We believe in creating careers, not jobs. During your time with us you’ll receive regular, honest, helpful feedback. We’ll be looking for ways to grow your expertise, and we will provide opportunities for your professional development. Although we’re a remote team, we speak every day, and arrange regular meetings both by department and as a company.

Required skills:

  • A flair for user experience and user interface design
  • Experience with HTML, CSS, and jQuery
  • The ability to translate wireframes into designs
  • Comfortable talking to customers through email, phone, and in-person
  • Comfortable using macOS as your day-to-day operating system, or happy to learn
  • A strong standard of spoken and written English
  • An interest in education, safeguarding and improving children’s lives
Other things that might be useful:
  • Exposure to development using Ruby on Rails
The highlights:
  • Work remotely, with travel covered for training days and team building
  • Essential hardware provided, including a laptop and VOIP phone
  • Full training, including safeguarding, health and safety and information security
  • Staff Employee Assistance Program
  • 28 days’ holiday pro-rata, including bank holidays
  • Regular wage and benefits reviews
  • (Negotiable) reduced hours outside term time
